Controlled Environment Agriculture Research Complex

In the fall of 2022, (the) Ohio State University opened the doors to a new research facility. A few years ago I had the privilege of taking a tour and it did not disappoint. This greenhouse is one of the largest and most high-tech spaces of its kind in the United States, built to push the boundaries of controlled environment agriculture. With gutters standing 7.5 meters high (that’s over 24 feet for our American readers) there is amble space for vine crops, strawberries, and hydroponic greens to stretch out and thrive — far beyond what a standard greenhouse could ever accommodate.

Projects like this don’t come together alone, and we’re proud to have partnered with so many talented organizations across the industry to help bring this facility to life.

I snapped a few photos on my iPhone while I was there — take a look below.

A sign on an easel in a greenhouse describes features of a High-Wire Greenhouse, including ETFE film use, lighting, self-cleaning, and climate controls. The ground is covered with gravel and a concrete bench is nearby. The sky appears hazy. - Van Wingerden Commercial Greenhouses A large, modern greenhouse with clear panels and a metal frame stands on a gravel path. Several ventilation units are mounted along one wall. The sky appears overcast. - Van Wingerden Commercial Greenhouses Rows of tall tomato plants with ripe red tomatoes grow indoors in a greenhouse. The plants are supported by vertical strings and irrigation tubes run along the ground. The area appears clean and organized. - Van Wingerden Commercial Greenhouses A wide hallway inside a greenhouse, featuring metal railings, ceiling fans, exposed pipes, and large glass windows allowing natural light to fill the space. - Van Wingerden Commercial Greenhouses
